Delete files

Here you can delete the marked files. Open the panel with the Delete files button on the left of the Duplicate files or Remaining files tab.

These settings are available:

  • Delete to the Recycle Bin where possible (Move to the Trash where possible on macOS) - The files are sent to the Recycle Bin or Trash, so you can get them back if you need to. Unticked, they are deleted permanently - careful with this one!
    • On Windows, be warned that files on some removable drives and network drives can’t go to the Recycle Bin, and are permanently deleted even if this option is ticked. You will be told how many files this happened to.
    • On macOS, a file that can’t be moved to the Trash (for example on a network share or some USB drives) is left where it is and reported as an error - it is never deleted permanently while this option is ticked.
    • On Linux, moving files to the Trash is not yet available. Untick this option to delete files.
  • Remove empty folders - After the files are removed, Duplicate Cleaner removes any folders left empty where files were removed. It also removes empty subfolders.
  • Protect important system folders - Files will not be removed from important system folders. For a list of these folders, see Skip system folders.
  • Also process sidecar files - Delete the marked files’ sidecar files along with them.

Click Delete files to start. You will be asked to confirm.

The buttons next to View log open the Recycle Bin (or Trash) and, on Windows, the Recycle Bin settings.

Not yet available. Deleting files directly from the list, with the Delete key or the right-click menu (the Allow direct deletion from duplicate lists setting), is not available in this version.
