Filtering the lists

Duplicate Cleaner has several powerful ways of filtering the Duplicate files and Remaining files lists. This lets you focus on a smaller set of files at a time. Operations such as the Selection Assistant also work on the filtered list, letting you break a task down into parts.

There are several ways to filter - the Filters drop-down above the list (or the Filters side panel), the right-click menu, the column heading menu, and the find bar.

Filters only change what is shown. Marks on files that are filtered out are kept.

Click Filters above the list to see the filters. Any active filters are listed on the button. Several filters can be used together - a file must pass all of them to be shown.

The number of files shown is displayed next to the button. Click Refresh filters to apply the filters again (for example after changing marks), and Clear filters to remove all of them.

The same filters are available as a side panel - click Filters on the toolbar at the left of the list.

  • Marked - Show only marked files.
  • Not marked - Show only files that are not marked.
  • Protected - Show only files that are protected.
  • Preset - Show only files of the types in a filter preset, such as Images or Documents. (Pro)
  • Size - Show only files between a Minimum and Maximum size.

These are only on the Duplicate files list.

  • Expand filter to show whole group - Whenever a file is shown by the other filters, the rest of its group is shown too - even though other files in the group would normally fall outside the filter. This has many useful applications. For instance:
    • Filter by a folder, then see the other folders that hold copies of its files.
    • Filter by a file type, then see what other file types it has been grouped with.
    • Filter by a word in the file name, and view the complete groups where it occurs.
  • Group has mark - Show groups where one or more files are marked.
  • Group has no marks - Show groups where no files are marked.
  • Group has some but not all marked - Show groups which have one or more files marked, excluding groups with all files marked.
  • Groups with all files marked - Show groups where every file is marked. This is an important filter to check to prevent accidental file loss!
  • Files per group - Show only groups with between a Minimum and Maximum number of files (for example between 5 and 100).
  • Group sizes - Show only groups whose total size is in a range (for example 100 MB to 1 GB).

Some combinations can never show anything - for example Marked with Group has no marks - so ticking one of them clears the other.

Filters switched on from the right-click menu, the column headings or the find bar are listed under Other filters, where you can turn them off again.

Right-click a file in the list for filters based on that file:

  • Filter to selected - Show only the selected rows.
  • Filter this File type - Show only files of the same type (for example .jpg).
  • Filter this Folder - Show only files in the same folder.
  • Filter this Group - Show only the file’s duplicate group.
  • Clear filters - Remove all filters.

When a filter is on, the menu offers Remove filter instead.

Right-click a column heading for:

  • Filter groups where value differs - Show only groups where the files have different values in this column. For example, on the File Name column this finds copies that have been renamed.
  • Filter groups where value is the same - Show only groups where all the files have the same value in this column.

You can filter from the find bar. Type some text, choose a column, and click Use as filter. Click Remove filter to remove the find filter (this won’t clear the other filters).

The Duplicate folders tab has its own filters, and can also filter the Duplicate files list to a folder or folder group with Show filtered in Duplicate files tab.
